Box Score The Eastern Mennonite field hockey team lost at home Saturday afternoon, dropping a 5-0 decision to St. Mary's (Md.)
The Royals came out strong in the opening minutes, earning a corner with a resulting shot, but the rest of the half belonged to St. Mary's. The visitors spread out three scores to have a 3-0 lead at intermission.
The women picked up their play in the second half, including a flurry of shots 10 minutes in. But the visiting Seahawks added the cushion they needed by scoring twice in the span of three minute, and then continued to keep EMU out of the cage over the final 18 minutes.
St. Mary's had a 15-6 edge in shots, including 13-3 in shots on goal. Jenessa Derstine (Harleysville, Pa./Christopher Dock) led the Royals with three shots, including two on goal. Melissa Cox (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) had the only other shot on target.
Mary Beth Danaher (Matoaca, Va./Matoaca) started between the pipes and made six saves. Hannah Daley (Lothian, Md./Southern) played the final 12 minutes in goal with one save.
The loss drops the women to 1-8 overall. They return to conference play on Wednesday, hosting Roanoke College at 7:00pm.
