The Lady Royals got their first win of the season and Coach Brenda Bechler's 100th career victory all at the same time Saturday afternoon, getting a late goal in a 1-0 win at St. Mary's (MD).

The first half featured a combined total of only eight shots, with the host Seahawks getting the only shot on goal.  St. Mary's picked up their play in the second, knocking seven shots on goal in the final 35 minutes.  However, goalie Sam Ferrier (Sellersville, PA/Christopher Dock) was good for all seven of those saves.

With less than six minutes to play, Eastern Mennonite earned a penalty corner, followed by another 30 seconds later.  Finally Michelle Zook (Allensville, PA/Belleville Mennonite) knocked the ball into the cage, giving the Lady Royals a 1-0 lead with just 4:49 left on their only shot on goal in the game.

The defense held firm in the final minutes, denying St. Mary's another shot to claim the win.

Ferrier and Mary Beth Danaher (Matoaca, VA/Matoaca) split halves in goal to combine for eight saves and the shutout.  Attacker Jenessa Derstine (Harleysville, PA/Christopher Dock) had a team high three shots.

The Lady Royals improve to 1-4 with their first win of the season over a talented Seahawk squad.  For Bechler, she hits a career milestone with 100 victories.  She has an overall record of 100 wins against 72 losses early in her tenth season at EMU.

The women now have a week off before opening their ODAC schedule next Saturday at Sweet Briar.
