Box Score Host Mary Washington proved true to its national ranking Tuesday, rolling to a 9-1 win over the EMU field hockey team in Fredericksburg, VA.
The undefeated Eagles, ranked No. 5 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA national poll, scored four unanswered goals over the first 35 minutes, and had the lead at 8-0 in the second before the Lady Royals found the scoreboard.
In the 58th minute, Jessica Blanks (Richmond, V/Manchester) hit the cage for her sixth goal of the season, getting an assist from Bethany Hench (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle). UMW tacked on one more score for the final tally.
EMU was out-shot 36-8 in the loss. Blanks put both of her shots on goal. Jenessa Derstine (Harleysville, PA/Christopher Dock) had three shots and Andrea Myers (Dillsburg, PA/Northern York) added two.
Sam Ferrier (Sellersville, PA/Christopher Dock) started between the pipes and made nine saves. Mary Beth Danaher (Matoaca, VA/Matoaca) finished the game and had seven saves.
The non-conference loss drops EMU to 2-7. They return to ODAC play on Saturday with a key matchup at Washington and Lee. Start time is high noon in Lexington.
