Field Hockey Women Washed Out By Eagles

Box Score

Host Mary Washington proved true to its national ranking Tuesday, rolling to a 9-1 win over the EMU field hockey team in Fredericksburg, VA.

The undefeated Eagles, ranked No. 5 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA national poll, scored four unanswered goals over the first 35 minutes, and had the lead at 8-0 in the second before the Lady Royals found the scoreboard.

In the 58th minute, Jessica Blanks (Richmond, V/Manchester) hit the cage for her sixth goal of the season, getting an assist from Bethany Hench (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle).  UMW tacked on one more score for the final tally.

EMU was out-shot 36-8 in the loss.  Blanks put both of her shots on goal.  Jenessa Derstine (Harleysville, PA/Christopher Dock) had three shots and Andrea Myers (Dillsburg, PA/Northern York) added two.

Sam Ferrier (Sellersville, PA/Christopher Dock) started between the pipes and made nine saves.  Mary Beth Danaher (Matoaca, VA/Matoaca) finished the game and had seven saves.

The non-conference loss drops EMU to 2-7.  They return to ODAC play on Saturday with a key matchup at Washington and Lee.  Start time is high noon in Lexington.
