Women Win Wild One Over McDaniel In Double Overtime

Box Score

It took 92 minutes and four seconds, four ties and three lead changes before a winner was found, but Adriana Santiago's (Souderton, Pa./Christopher Dock) goal midway through the second overtime pushed Eastern Mennonite past McDaniel in nonconference field hockey action Saturday. The Green Terror scored first on their home field, but the Lady Royals scored last to grab a 5-4 win.

McDaniel scored off a rebounded shot 13 minutes in and held the lead until defender Hailee Rittle (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) tied the score just before halftime.

The Lady Royals took their first lead in the second, as Jessica Blanks (Midlothian, Va./Manchester) knocked in a rebound in the 40th minute.

But the Green Terror scored a pair of goals within two minutes of each other to retake the lead, 3-2. EMU had another answer two minutes later, though, as Linda Cimini (Cape May, NJ/Middle Township) made a great run up the right side and struck in a diving shot to tie the contest at 3-3.

Five minutes later, Cimini scored again to put the women ahead, this time with an assist from Rittle.

With just over eight minutes left in regulation, the Lady Royals couldn't hold onto the 4-3 edge. McDaniel got its fourth goal with 4:10 left on the clock. The Green Terror continued to control play, but couldn't retake the lead and the game slipped into overtime.

Each team had its moments in the first 15-minute OT session, but neither could find the cage. Midfielder Katie Cimini (Cape May, NJ/Middle Township) made a defensive save at one point to help send the game into double overtime.

McDaniel had a few shots early in the final session, but EMU won a corner with eight minutes left to play. Santiago initiated the corner and got a pass back from Rittle as she hit the high side for the game winner, 5-4.

The Lady Royals were outshot 19-11 and gave up more corners, but goalie Becky Nolt (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) made seven saves.

Linda Cimini and Rittle each finished the game with four points. Cimini had two goals while Rittle had a score and two assists.

Eastern Mennonite moves to 5-2 with the win but has a short turnaround time before playing at Mary Washington Sunday afternoon at 3:00pm.
