EMU 8, York 6
The women scored a pair of unearned runs in the second, but still trailed 6-2 after three innings. In the fifth, they broke through with a six-run inning.
Brooke Sigrist (Crimora, VA/Fort Defiance) hit a one-out double and Courtney Allman (Mt. Solon, VA/Fort Defiance) started the scoring with a two-out RBI single. EMU added three more RBI singles, with another two runs scoring via errors as the women jumped ahead 8-6.
The Spartans had two runners on base in each of the final three innings, but reliever Kaitlyn Morris (Elkton, VA/Page County) escaped the jam each time to preserve the two-run win.
The Lady Royals banged out ten hits, but also took full advantage of five York errors. Sigrist, who took over the leadoff spot in the batting order with shortstop Brooke Hensley (Elkton, VA/Spotswood) missing the day with academic commitments, had a pair of doubles and started the big rally. Angelia Miller (Bridgewater, VA/Turner Ashby) was 2-4 with two runs and an RBI.
Molly Smith (Elkton, VA/Spotswood) was also 2-4, scoring once and driving in another run. Nicolette Cuevas (Suffolk, VA/King's Fork) was 2-4 with an RBI, and Heather Bagwell (Harrisonburg, VA/Broadway) had a pair of RBIs. Casey Racer (Madison, VA/Madison County) scored twice.
Morris, who pitched the final 4.2 innings, picked up the win in scoreless relief. She struck out four and allowed five hits to improve to 3-5. Jordan Aylor (Madison, VA/Madison County) started the game but was charged with all six of York's runs in a no-decision.
EMU 5, York 4
The offense carried its momentum into the nightcap, kick-starting EMU to a 5-0 lead. Miller had a two-run single with two outs in the first.
Smith had an RBI double in the third, and Lauren Campbell (Stuarts Draft, VA/Stuarts Draft) drove her in to make it 4-0. Smith then added a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
The Spartans finally got to Smith in the circle in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three times. They added an unearned run to get within one run in the fifth, but Aylor took over and retired eight of the nine batters she faced to preserve the lead and pick up the save.
Smith improved to 5-0 with the win as she pitched the first 4.1 innings. She was also 3-4 from the plate with two RBIs and a run. Miller was 2-4 with two RBIs. Aislinn Lucas (Grottoes, VA/Fort Defiance) was 2-3 with a walk and scored once.
Eastern Mennonite improves to 14-6 with the non-conference wins. They return home on Friday for two make-up games against No. 18 Roanoke. The Maroons won the ODAC Tournament last spring, finished fourth in the national tourney, and are 13-4 this season.
