WINCHESTER, Va. – EMU made the short trip up 81 north on Wednesday, for a midweek showdown with Shenandoah University.
In game one, EMU took an early lead, but Shenandoah scored five unanswered across the fourth and fifth, to pick up a 6-3 win. Game two was a pitchers duel, with SU walking off with a sac fly in the seventh, winning 3-2.
EMU vs Shenandoah – Game One

Highlights
First Inning
- EMU got the scoring started early, taking a 1-0 lead when Grace Fravel led off with a single, moved to third on Meaghan Dean's base hit and came in to score on a wild pitch, for a 1-0 lead.
- Shenandoah got the run back in their half of the first, when their leadoff batter singled, stole second and advanced to third on an error and came in on a sac fly.
Second Inning
- The Royals pulled back out in front, as Aspen Jones singled to lead off the second, moved to second on an error and third on a passed ball and scored on Fravel's sac fly, giving EMU a 2-1 lead.
Fourth Inning
- Graham kept the Hornets bats at bay in the bottom of the second and third, and EMU was able to tack on another run in the top of the fourth. Brooke Morris and Fravel had back-to-back singles, putting runners on first and second. Maggie Mayhew sac bunted the runners to second and third, and Dean grounded out to first, driving in Morris for a 3-1 lead.
- Shenandoah used a pair of doubles, a pair of singles and a hit batsman to tie things at three, with no outs in the fourth.
- A bases loaded fielder's choice plated another run, giving SU a 4-3 run, but Graham was able to work out of the jam, getting a fly out and a strike out to keep the Hornets lead to one.
Fifth Inning
- The Royals were able to get runners on in the fifth, and had were close to pushing the tying run across, but Madee Arbaugh was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice by Gracie Conner.
- The Hornets used two hits and an error to push across a pair of insurance runs, taking a 6-3 lead after the fifth. Unfortunately, EMU only managed one hit over the final two innings, a Mayhew infield single in the sixth, as SU secured the win.

Highlights
First and Second Innings
- Shenandoah took an early 1-0 lead in game two, picking up a runner on a HBP with one out. She stole second and came in to score on an RBI double. But Lambert got a big strike out to keep SU at just a single run.
- In the top of the second, Arbaugh walked and Sydney Orndorff singled to short stop. A. Jones' sac bunt put runners on second and third, before an Emerson Adkins walk loaded the bases. Fravel singled up the middle, plating Arbaugh and tying the game at one.
- In the bottom of the second, SU put runners on second and third with just one out, but Lambert got a pop out and a fly out to strand the runners.
Fourth Inning
- SU re-took the lead in the fourth, when the lead off batter reached second on an error. A sac bunt moved her to third and she came in to score on a wild pitch, giving the Hornets a 2-1 advantage.
Sixth Inning
- Lambert worked out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the fifth, picking up a strike out to keep EMU within one.
- Dean led off the top of the sixth with a solo home run to right-center, tying the game at two apiece.
Seventh Inning
- EMU had the bases loaded, with two outs, in the top of the seventh, but a fielder's choice ended the frame, keeping the game tied at two.
- In the bottom of the seventh, the lead off Hornet walked, advanced to third on a single and came in to score on a sac fly to right field, to end the game.

What's Next
EMU will be back at home on Saturday, as they welcome in Guilford for a DH that was originally scheduled for Saturday, April 12. First pitch of game one is set for 1 pm.
