Royals Spread The Love In 5-1 Road Win

Box Score

Utilizing healthy doses of their bench, the Royals had no problem in blowing past host Gallaudet University Wednesday night, picking up a 5-1 win in Washington, DC. Eastern Mennonite's soccer men improve to 6-1 with their sixth straight win as they wrap up non-conference play.

It's the most non-conference victories for the men since 2008 when they went 8-0 out of the ODAC. EMU ended 12-7 that year, their most wins since the 1998 ODAC Championship team finished 15-7-1.

The Royals venture into ODAC play this weekend, traveling to Lynchburg to take on Randolph College. Game time on Saturday is 1:00pm. The WildCats are 5-2 on the season, including an impressive 1-0 win over Emory University.

Even resting most of their starters against Gallaudet, Eastern Mennonite had a quick jump when David Nester (Bluffton, Ohio/Bluffton) bent in a corner kick off a defender in the 17th minute. Shortly after another corner kick, the Royals made it 2-0 in the 28th minute when Caleb Oakes (Waynesboro, Va./Stuarts Draft) found the net. Braden Herman (Waynesboro, Va./Fort Defiance) and Saber El-Abani (Winchester, Va./John Handley) assisted the sophomore on his first career goal.

Oakes then set up freshman Troy Davis (Gainesville, Va./Patriot) for his first collegiate score in the 35th minute, and David Shafer (Maitland, Fla./Bishop Moore Catholic) made it 4-0 five minutes later with an assist from Dave Drafton (Alexandria, Va./Howard Gardner).

The Royals still controlled play for most of the second half, but the Bison got their only score early in the frame when a Sean Huber scored in the 52nd minute.

Senior Grayson Mast (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite), playing in his first game of the year, punched in a free kick from outside of the box with 11:48 remaining.

Eastern Mennonite ended with a 26-4 domination in shots, including 14-2 on goal. The men were also favored in corner kicks, 9-2.

Davis led the way with four shots, three on goal, while 16 others had at least one shot.

Keeper Matthew Overacker (Mount Crawford, Va./Turner Ashby) made one save in his scoreless 45 minutes, while Emmanuel Kampanga (Kinshasa, Congo/American School) allowed the lone goal in his half.
