HARRISONBURG, Va. – EMU Track & Field made its second out-of-state trip of the outdoor season on Thursday, heading to Pennsylvania for a rare mid-week meet at the Shippensburg Mid-Week Bonanza. The Royals brought a small contingent of sprinters, jumpers and throwers to compete at the Seth Grove Stadium on the campus of Shippensburg University.
The first-year athletes took the spotlight for the Royals.
Koran Rucker set the EMU school record in the hammer throw with an impressive mark of 53.28m (174'10"). That topped the previous program best of 51.96m (170'6"), set back in 2007 by Nathan Turner. Also,
Filipo Toelau and
Ahsan Abul-Qasim picked up third-place finishes in their events.
Highlights
- SPRINTS
- 100m Dash: Jameel Vann sprinted through the line in 11.07 to claim 16th place out of 49 competitors in the 100m.
- 200m Dash: Da'Shawn Winters set a new PR of 22.39, winning his heat to place 11th overall.
- 110m Hurdles: Toelau made the podium, finishing third in a time of 14.64, just .01 off of his personal best.
- JUMPS
- Long Jump: Abul-Qasim continued his strong outdoor performance in the long jump, placing third with a best jump of 6.97m (22'10.50").
- THROWS
- Hammer: Rucker's school record throw came on his second attempt of the day, propelling him to third overall.
- Discus: Rucker finished fifth overall with a best throw of 45.75m (150'1"), followed by Silas Bates in 23rd, whose set a new personal record of 35.26m (115'8").
- Shot Put: Rucker collected another fifth-place finish in the shot put as his best throw of the day landed at 15.50m (50'10.25"). Bates placed 25th with a mark of 11.61m (38'1.25").
What's Next
The EMU Track & Field team will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, April 18, when they send athletes to the WildCat Invitational, hosted by Randolph College in Lynchburg. The first events of the day will begin at 9 a.m.
