Rucker, Winters Stand Out For Royal Men at Bast-Cregger Invitational

SALEM, Va. – EMU Track & Field made its second trip to the Cregger Center at Roanoke College this season, taking a portion of the team to compete in the Bast-Cregger Multis Invitational. The meet featured athletes from several ODAC schools, including Averett, Bridgewater, Hollins, Lynchburg, Randolph, Washington & Lee, and the host school Roanoke.
 
On the men's side, Koran Rucker and Da'Shawn Winters had a wonderful weekend for the Royals. Rucker swept the throwing events, winning both the shot put and the weight throw. Winters took gold in the long jump and made the finals of the 60-meter dash.

Highlights
  • SPRINTS
    • 60m Dash: Winters set a new personal record of 7.07 to advance to the finals, where he went on to finish eighth. Winters moved up one spot to fourth in EMU history in the 60m with his new PR time. Ethan Lloyd also set a PR of 7.11, good for a tie for sixth in EMU history in the event. Isaiah Reid's time of 7.14 moved him into eighth on the school's all-time list.
    • 200m Dash: Josh Joseph posted a personal record, sprinting one lap of track in 24.12.
    • 400m Dash: Joseph led the Royals in the 400m with a 17th-place finish and a time of 54.50. Bryce Alley improved his personal best in the event, crossing the finish line in 57.09.
    • 60m Hurdles: Shaddai Bailey advanced to the final, breaking the tape at 8.86. He ultimately placed eighth in the final.
  • DISTANCE
    • 1000m Run: Logan Boyd represented the Royals in this event, placing 12th and clocking in at 2:57.75.  
    • 5000m Run: Ben Huyard put on a PR performance of his own, completing 25 laps of the 200m indoor track in 17:42.53, good for 15th place.
  • JUMPS
    • Long Jump: Winters clutched up on his final attempt of the day, leaping 6.84m (22'5.25") to clinch the win. Demitri Hinton of Lynchburg finished second. The new personal best mark moves Winters up to fourth on EMU's all-time list for the indoor long jump.
  • THROWS
    • Shot Put: On his fifth throw of the day, Rucker landed the implement at 16.03m (52'7.25") to emerge victorious over Jesus Flores of Bridgewater. Rucker also solidified his current position of third on EMU's all-time list for the indoor shot put.
    • Weight Throw: Rucker set a mark of 16.63m (54'6.75") on his winning throw, resetting his own school record in the event that he achieved earlier this season.
    • Also of note, Mathew Lawson set a new personal record of 10.68m (35'0.5").
What's Next
The EMU Track & Field team will take athletes to two different meets next weekend on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 6-7. A select group of athletes will head to the Doc Hale Invitational at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., while the majority of the team will travel to the VMI Winter Relays in Lexington, Va.
