NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The EMU Cross Country teams boarded a bus for the eastern part of the Commonwealth of Virginia on Friday to participate in the CNU Invitational at Lee Hall Mansion in Newport News. The Royals toed the start line against a strong field that included Division I programs VCU and Hampton, Division III powerhouses CNU and Salisbury, and ODAC rivals Bridgewater and Virginia Wesleyan.
The women's team brought a young squad to compete in the 757 area code as five of their eight runners completed their first college 6k (3.73 miles).
Highlights
- Team Score: 236 points (9th of 10)
- Senior Elili Asefa showed the way for the Royals, crossing the finish line in a time of 25:27.59 to place 36th overall.
- Zoe Clymer, a junior from Collinsville, Miss., was the next EMU runner to finish, placing 72nd with a time of 28:47.94.
- Out of the Royals' first-year runners, Juliette Soos traversed the 6k course the quickest, finishing 75th and clocking in at 29:12.65.
- Claire Hurst and Daisy Buller completed the scoring five for the Royals, coming home in 77th and 79th places with times of 30:16.71 and 30:57.17, respectively.
- Sarah Wheeler (82nd/32:40.50), Emmy Teodoro (88th/35:31.03) and Emilee White (93rd/39:14.81) rounded out the Royals' lineup in Newport News.
What's Next
The EMU cross country teams will stay close to home for their next meet, competing in the Bridgewater Invitational at Bridgewater College on Saturday, Sept. 20. The men's 8k will go off at 10 a.m., followed by the women's 6k at 10:50 a.m. For the Royals, the meet will also serve as a preview for the ODAC Championships at Bridgewater later this fall.
