Men’s Sprinters Re-Write Royals’ Top 10 Indoor Lists in Two-Meet Weekend

HARRISONBURG, Va. – EMU Track & Field decided to divide and conquer between two meets this weekend. A select group of sprinters took a long trip up the east coast to take on elite competition at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston, Mass. Athletes from other event groups stayed closer to home by competing at the Joe LaRocco Invitational at Roanoke College in Salem, Va.

Highlights – Men
  • DISTANCE/MID-DISTANCE
    • Bellamy Immanuel joined the sprinters in Boston to compete in the mile run, setting a new personal record of 4:18.43, good for third all-time in EMU indoor history.
  • SPRINTS
    • Damon Morgan moved up to No. 2 all-time in school history for the indoor 200-meter dash, completing one lap of the track in 22.00 seconds. Additionally, Bryson Hunter rose up to fourth on that list by clocking in at 22.74, while first-year Da'Shawn Winters is now tied for fifth in the EMU indoor 200m by crossing the line in 22.84 seconds.
    • Jowell Gonzalez-Santiago continued his sensational first-year campaign by placing 46th out of 213 finishers in the 400-meter dash. His time of 49.06 boosts him up to third all-time in school history for the event.  
  • JUMPS
    • At Roanoke, Micah Mast finished eighth in the pole vault, clearing the bear at 3.70m (12'-1.5").
  • THROWS
    • Christian Schmidt set a new personal best in the weight throw with a mark of 11.37m (37'-3.75"), putting him eighth on the EMU all-time list.
Highlights – Women
  • DISTANCE/MID-DISTANCE
    • Jenna Weaver provided the gold medal moment of the weekend, winning the 5000-meter run at Roanoke in comeback fashion. Down by about 11 seconds with 2000m left, Weaver caught and passed the leader on the final lap, breaking the tape with a new PR of 19:07.56.
    • Lucy Unzicker collected a pair of top-10 finishes in the mile run and 3000-meter run, finishing ninth and sixth in those events, respectively.
  • SPRINTS
    • Competing in Boston, first-year sprinter Angel David clocked in at 1:04.56 for 400m.
  • JUMPS
    • Kailee Franklin finished eighth in the pole vault, clearing a height of 2.40m (7'-10.5").
  • THROWS
    • Sophomore Nia Boyd threw a personal best mark of 8.01m (26'-3.5") in the shot put.
What's Next
The EMU Track & Field team will have one last regular season tune-up on Saturday, Feb. 17 when they send athletes to the Larry Sharpe Memorial Invitational in Hagerstown, Md.
