Shenandoah Outslugs Royals in Mid-Week Contest

Box Score

WINCHESTER, Va. - EMU played its final midweek game on Tuesday, taking the trip up 81 to take on #22 Shenandoah.

The Royals had a pair of big innings but couldn't complete the comeback as they fell to the Hornets, 12-8. The loss drops EMU to 10-21, 6-12 ODAC.

Highlights

  • Shenandoah was able to get runners on in both of the first two innings, but EMU starter Adrian Abad worked out of the jam and kept the game scoreless through two.
  • The Royals broke through for four runs on five hits in the top of the third. Jordan Jones led off with a single and came around to score on Jaylon Lee's double down the left field line. Lee moved to third on Brett Lindsay's single before Ray Tricarico sac bunted Lindsay to second, putting two runners in scoring position. Back-to-back singles by Natty Solomon and Gage Riddick plated both runs, giving EMU a 3-0 lead. Riddick moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double to the left field fence from Robert Guenther, his second hit is as many at-bats. SU tied the game up in their half of the third after an RBI single and three-run inside-the-park homerun.
  • EMU stormed back and re-took the lead in the top of the fourth. Jones reached base on a third strike wild pitch and moved to second on Lee's base hit. After advancing to second and third, Jones scored on Tricarico's second hit, moving EMU ahead 5-4. Solomon drilled a three-run homerun over the left-center scoreboard, putting the Royals on top 8-4. The Hornets, however, were able to use big innings in the third, fourth and fifth, scoring seven runs off Brendon Barrett and a run off Karson Jennings, to pull back in front, 12-8.
  • Jennings looked strong in his final four innings, holding the Hornets scoreless. Unfortunately, the Royals were also kept off the board as Shenandoah held on for the win. Barrett took the loss for EMU, giving up seven earned runs in 1.0 innings.
  • Offensively, Lee led the way for EMU, finishing 3-5 at the plate with an RBI and two runs. Solomon had a hit and four RBI while Guenther was 2-4 with an RBI.
