Royals Fall to #17 Washington and Lee

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. – The EMU field hockey team put its two-game win streak on the line Wednesday as they headed south to take on #17 Washington and Lee.

The Royals defense held the Generals to just two goals in the first, third and fourth quarters but a six-goal second frame propelled W&L to an 8-2 win over EMU.

Records: EMU 7-5, 1-3 ODAC | W&L 8-2, 1-1 ODAC

Highlights

  • 14' - The Generals came out shooting in the first quarter, picking up six shots on goal through the first 14 minutes, but Ann Ghally stopped them all, along with a Brandy Troutman defensive save. But at 13:45, Amanda Tan was able to find the back of the cage to give W&L a 1-0 lead after one.
  • 17' – Washington and Lee added a pair of goals in the 17th minute, one from a penalty stroke and the other coming from Kailey Fitzgerald, to put W&L up 3-0. They would add four more in the frame to lead 7-0 at the half.
  • 35' – Troutman got EMU's first shot of the game at the start of the third quarter, but it was blocked before it got to the cage. The Royals defense once again clamped down, allowing just one third quarter goal and Marie Wilson picking up a save.
  • 47' – EMU got on the board in the fourth off a penalty corner. Elizabeth Longacre sent a pass to Troutman who was able to beat the Generals keeper for her team-leading 10th goal of the season.
  • 51' – The Royals offense continued to pepper the Generals keeper with offense in the fourth, with Kate Landis, Juliana Ghally and Hayley Collins all taking shots. Then, with less than 10 minutes left, Longacre found Courtney Crawford whose shot got past the W&L keeper to make the score 8-2. Unfortunately, the Royals wouldn't have another shot but the defense did keep W&L off the board in the final frame.
