Box Score In their final home game of the 2021 season, the Diamond Royals used an overpowering offensive display to defeat Southern Virginia, collecting a total of 23 runs on 18 hits en route to the win.
EMU finishes out the regular season with a 7-12 record overall.
The Royals jumped to an early lead in the contest, scoring in the bottom of the second with an RBI single from Colin Jones (Chesterfield, Va./Clover Hill). Brett Lindsay (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) added an RBI single of his own in the next inning to put EMU ahead by two.
After the Knights tied up the score in the top of the fourth, the Royals answered with a four-run inning, highlighted by a two-RBI triple from Jaylon Lee (Newport News, Va./Denbigh), who then scored on an error during the play. The Royals found themselves with a 6-2 lead after four innings of play.
In the top of the fifth, the Knights answered with a four-run inning of their own, tying up the tally at 6-6.
From there, the Royals kicked their offense into a higher gear, jump started with a home run from Billy Quinn (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge). EMU went on to score five in the bottom of the fifth.
EMU exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead. Terry Jones (Palmyra, Va./Covenant School) started the offense with a sacrifice fly in his pinch-hit appearance, and Quinn rounded out the scoring in the frame with his second home run of the day, this time plating three.
After the dust settled, the Diamond Royals found themselves with a comfortable 18-6 lead. They went on to add five more in the bottom of the eighth, and finished the contest out with the final score of 23-10.
Quinn brought in four RBI on the day with his two home runs, with Lee also bringing in four on account of three extra base hits.
C. Jones went 2-3 with two RBI and Lindsay went 3-6, collecting three RBI.
Brendon Barrett (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) earned the win on the mound, throwing three innings of scoreless ball with three strikeouts.
