Diamond Royals Unable To Overcome Early Deficit

Box Score

The Diamond Royals dropped a midweek contest at Washington and Lee on Wednesday, losing 12-5 in their second game of the year against the Generals.

EMU now holds a record of 5-10 on the year, with the Generals improving to 6-11.

The Royals found themselves in a quick hole right out of the gate, being held scoreless in the first two innings with Washington and Lee putting seven runs on the board in a hurry.

With two quick singles from Ethan Spraker (Vinton, Va./William Byrd) and Jordan Jones (Saxe, Va./Randolph Henry), the Royals threatened in the top of the third. After a sacrifice bunt from Jaylon Lee (Newport News, Va./Denbigh), EMU had runners on second and third with only one out in the inning. Brett Lindsay (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) knocked a flyball to right to score Spraker and send Jones to third, helping the Royals score their first run. Ray Tricarico (Culpeper, Va./Eastern View) knocked a flyball to centerfield, but it was ultimately tracked down and caught for the third out.

The Generals added on in the bottom of the fourth, pushing across four more runs to put the score at 11-1 through four innings.

EMU scored two more in the top of the fifth on account of an RBI-single off the bat of Lindsay.

The Royals held W&L down from there, only allowing one run for the remainder of the game, but they were only able to push across one run in the eighth and the ninth, pushing the score to its final tally of 12-5 in favor of the Generals.

Lindsay ended the day with three RBI on on two hits. John Judy (Shanks, W.V./Hampshire) and Jones each added to hits on the day, as well.

Jonathan Nagle (Chesapeake, Va./Portsmouth Christian) was charged with the loss, allowing seven earned runs in two innings of work. Cooper Thomas (Culpeper, Va./Eastern View) provided three innings out of the bullpen, only allowing one run with a strikeout.

Zach Perkins earned his first win of the year for the Generals, throwing eight innings with nine strikeouts.

The Royals are on the road again on Friday, Apr. 23, traveling to Emory & Henry for a doubleheader that was moved up a day in order to beat the rain forecasted for Saturday.
