Box Score Weeks have passed since the two teams last met, on a Saturday meant for two games. Rain had something to say then, forcing the Diamond Royals to reschedule the second game of that day's planned doubleheader.
EMU made their way back to Lynchburg on Sunday, and a mere two frames of scoring and a pitchers' duel later, the Royals lost a tight game, 2-1. The Royals now sit at 5-9, both overall and in conference play, with the Hornets improving to 22-10 overall, 12-4 in conference.
Back-to-back singles from Ethan Spraker (Vinton, Va./William Byrd) and Jacob Merica (Elkton, Va./East Rockingham) got the ball rolling for the Royals in the top of the third. With Spraker on third with one away, Jordan Jones (Saxe, Va./Randolph Henry) hit a ground ball to the second basemen, who tried to turn a double play to end the inning, but Jones was able to get to first safely, scoring Spraker. With the run, EMU found themselves with an early one-run lead.
The Hornets hit back in the bottom of the fifth when Kinston Carson knocked a two-run home run to take the Lynchburg's first lead of the day.
The offense halted from there for the Royals, with Zack Potts keeping quiet for the remainder of the game, finishing the complete game.
Despite pitching well, John Judy (Shanks, W.V./Hampshire) earned the loss on the mound, pitching 7.0 innings with four strikeouts, only allowing the two earned runs.
Braydon Collier (Ruckersville, Va./William Monroe) pitched an inning of scoreless relief with a strikeout.
The Royals are on the road again on Wednesday, Apr. 21, traveling to Washington & Lee, looking to find their way back in the win column.
