Box Score Offense was on display Tuesday evening, as the Eastern Mennonite Diamond Royals powered their way over the visiting Washington & Lee Generals, 18-11.
The Royals get over the .500 mark with the win, improving to 4-3 on the year. The Generals fall to 3-8.
Both teams threatened in the first inning, getting a handful of runners on base, but were unable to put anything across.
In the second, the Royals would kick off the offense in a big way, loading up the bases before Jaylon Lee (Newport News, Va./Denbigh) came to the plate. Lee turned on a pitch, sending a towering shot over the left field wall for a grand slam. The home run was Lee's second of the year so far.
EMU scored three more in the fourth, with Brett Lindsay (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) adding a sacrifice fly to put the Royals up 7-0 early in the game.
In the top of the fifth, Washington and Lee made a dent in the EMU lead with a two-RBI single from Luke Erdmann.
The Royals answered, exploding for a nine-run inning in the bottom frame of the fifth, highlighted by Lee's second home run of the day, tacking on three more RBI to his credit. John Judy (Shanks, W.V./Hampshire) added a bases-clearing double in the frame, putting three RBI to his count.
The Royals were looking at a 16-2 lead with four innings left to play.
In the sixth and seventh, the Generals mounted a comeback, putting up seven runs and pushing the score to 16-9 heading into the final innings.
In the bottom of the seventh, EMU regained some of their lead, tacking on two runs with Alex Gulisano (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) launching an RBI double to highlight the inning.
Washington and Lee threatened again in the top of the ninth. Erdmann struck again for the Generals, pushing across two with a single up the middle. Judy, who took over on the mound coming into the inning, struck out the final hitter, keeping the final tally in the Royals' favor at 18-11.
Lee had an impressive line on the day, tallying three hits, two of them being home runs, and a staggering eight RBI. Judy added his three RBI in the contest.
Daniel Hupart (Woodbridge, Va./C.D. Hylton) earned the win on the mound after throwing a scoreless inning of relief.
The Royals hit the road on Friday, Apr. 2, taking on Hampden-Sydney in an ODAC doubleheader.
