Eighth Inning Propels Hornets Over Diamond Royals

Box Score

The University of Lynchburg used a seven-run frame late in the game to hurdle over the visiting Eastern Mennonite Royals. In a game that was tight until the final stretch, the Royals fell to the Hornets, 11-5.

Eastern Mennonite is back at the .500 mark with the loss at 3-3 on the season. The Hornets improve their record to 11-8, 4-2 in ODAC play.

EMU took an early lead, jumping ahead in the first frame of the game by taking advantage of a wild pitch from the Lynchburg pitcher, scoring Jaylon Lee (Newport News, Va./Denbigh).

The game settled in quickly from there, with both starters keeping the batters at bay early in the contest.

The Hornets evened up the score in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI triple from Gavin Collins, scoring Avery Neaves who doubled earlier in the frame. In the next inning, Lynchburg took the lead with a two-run inning, pushing the score to 3-1.

Braydon Collier (Ruckersville, Va./William Monroe) took over on the mound for EMU, throwing a scoreless frame to keep the score where it was. The Royals inched closer in the top of the seventh after Ray Tricarico (Culpeper, Va./Eastern View) tripled to lead off the inning and Ethan Spraker (Vinton, Va./William Byrd) knocked him in with a grounder to shortstop. The two teams ended up trading runs in the inning, though, with a homer from Garrett Jackson knocking in a run for the Hornets.

EMU used a three-run frame in the top of the eighth to take the lead again, capped off by an RBI single from Tricarico.

The Hornets exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the frame to retake the lead. Totaling five hits, with two of them being home runs, the Hornets went into the ninth with a comfortable lead.

The Royals could not get anything going offensively in the top of the ninth, finishing the game at the final score of 11-5.

Tricarico highlighted the offense for the Royals on the day, going 2-3 with an RBI, also tallying the only extra-base hit for EMU.

Brendon Barrett (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) pitched strong, only allowing three earned runs in 5.0 innings of work with two strikeouts. Collier was charged with the loss after allowing five hits and three earned in his relief appearance.

The scheduled second game of today's doubleheader was postponed due to weather. A makeup date has not been established.

The Royals look to bounce back from the loss on Tuesday, Mar. 30 against Washington and Lee. First pitch is slated for 4:00pm.
