Box Score EMU's baseball team finished up their final road trip of 2016 with a loss, falling 11-6 at Messiah College Wednesday afternoon.
The men are 15-20 after the non-conference loss as they prepare to close the season at home on Saturday. They host Virginia Wesleyan (17-12 / 11-7 ODAC) in a conference doubleheader, with first pitch at 12:00pm. It will also be Senior Recognition Day at Eastern Mennonite.
The Royals gave up runs in each of the first three innings, trailing 5-0 before they got on the board. In the fourth, Kyle Salladay (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) and Kyle Armstrong (Greenville, Va./Riverheads) led off with back-to-back doubles to score their first run.
The duo each had an RBI single in the fifth, as EMU got within 5-3.
But the Falcons put the game away by putting up two-spots in each of the sixth, seventh and eighth frames, blowing up their lead to 11-3.
The men rallied in their last at-bat, started by a leadoff triple from Dean Lowery (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield). An error and another hit brought in two runs, and the Royals worked the bases loaded with just one out. A sacrifice fly made it 11-6, but that was it as the Royals left two more of their game's total of 10 men on base.
Both hits and errors abounded in the game, as the teams combined for 27 hits and seven errors. Armstrong batted 4-for-5 with three RBIs and Salladay finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Lowery scored twice.
Senior Ryan Tierney (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) started on the hill but allowed five runs in 2.2 frames to get the loss. Kyle Johnson (Nathalie, Va./Rustburg) and Michael Wilhite (Hershey, Pa./Lower Dauphin) were the only pitchers to not allow a run during their time in the game.
