Box Score 2 EMU's baseball men scored 16 runs in Saturday's ODAC doubleheader at Guilford, but had to settle for a split as only one of them came in the nightcap. The Royals improve to 15-16 overall, equaling their win total from last spring, which is also the most victories for the program since 2002.
EMU 15, Guilford 5
The Royals had their bats going in full force in the opener and jumped ahead with three runs in the top of the third. They plated a pair of unearned runs to lead 5-0 after five.
Guilford got their first run on a two-out wild pitch in the sixth before Eastern Mennonite broke open the game in the seventh. The men sent 12 men to the plate and six of them touched home to blow open an 11-1 cushion.
Brandon Carroll (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) capped the game with a two-run triple in the ninth, as the Royals had their highest scoring ODAC game since a 20-10 win over Hampden-Sydney in 2012.
Each of EMU's starters had at least one of their 17 hits, with six of the men collecting multi-hit games. Conner Smith (Chesapeake, Va./Oscar Smith) finished 4-4 with a walk as he scored three times and had one RBI. Jonathan Estrada (Miami, Fla./Doral Academy) was 2-5 with a walk, to go with three runs and three RBIs. Kyle Mathews (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) was 2-4 with a walk, two runs and two RBIs. Adam Posey (Poquoson, Va./Poquoson) batted 2-5 with two runs and an RBI as he extended his hitting streak to 17 games.
Posey also picked up the win from the hill, pitching 8.0+ innings and getting charged with all of the runs as he improved to 3-3 on the year. Charlie Mills (South Hill, Va./Parkview) relieved in the ninth for a scoreless 1.0 inning.
Guilford 3, EMU 1
After the two teams combined for 31 hits in the opener they put together just 14 in the nightcap. Unfortunately for EMU, Guilford got four of their six hits in the third inning, including a solo homerun. An RBI single and RBI double finally pushed the lead to 3-0 and chased starting pitcher Brett Whitlow (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover).
The Royals got only three men into scoring position until the ninth inning when they loaded the bases with one away. The Quakers closer came in and, despite allowing one run to score on a wild pitch, got a strikeout and fly out to leave the tying runs on base in the 3-1 final.
Mathews was 2-3 with a walk, and Carroll also had a pair of hits. Posey went hitless for the first time since March 5, ending his 17-game hitting streak. He has at least one hit in 28 of EMU's 31 games this season.
Whitlow gave up all three of Guilford's run in 2.2 innings, falling to 0-4. Aaron Hooven (Carroll, Va./Carroll) allowed just two hits in 5.1 innings of scoreless relief.
EMU will try to improve their 3-11 ODAC mark next week, playing at second-place Bridgewater College on Tuesday. First pitch against the Eagles is at 4:00pm.
