Box Score 2 EMU's ODAC schedule didn't cut them any favors on Saturday, as the young Royals travelled to take on powerful Randolph-Macon. They Yellow Jackets won the ODAC Championship last spring, and exerted their talent in today's doubleheader, taking a pair of 13-3 decisions.
Randolph-Macon 13, EMU 3
The Yellow Jackets methodically built up a 4-0 lead after three innings of play. Adam Posey (Poquoson, Va./Poquoson) had an RBI single in the fifth to get EMU on the board, but Randolph-Macon broke open the game with nine runs over their next three at-bats to go up 13-1.
Posey and David Meehan (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) had RBI singles in the ninth to provide the final margin.
Despite getting 10 hits and R-MC committing four errors, the Royals couldn't combat 19 hits from their opponents. Posey started on the hill but was chased after 2.2 innings and was charged with four runs.
Posey also paced the offense from the leadoff spot, finishing 2-5 with two RBIs and a run. Kyle Armstrong (Greenville, Va./Riverheads) had a pair of singles and Meehan also reached base twice with a single and a walk.
Randolph-Macon 13, EMU 3
The nightcap was more competitive until late. Eastern Mennonite took their first lead of the day as their first four batters reached in the top of the first. Jonathan Estrada (Miami, Fla./Doral Academy) walked with the bases loaded to bring in Posey, but a quick double play and strikeout ended the rally.
R-MC took the lead with unearned runs in the second and third, but a Joe Hall (Rustburg, Va./Rustburg) RBI groundout in the top of the fourth tied the score at 2-2. The Yellow Jackets got it right back in the bottom of the frame, however, to go back in front, 3-2. The lead grew to 4-2 with a sac fly in the sixth, before Ian Norris (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) hit a two-out RBI single in the top of the seventh to slice it back to 4-3.
The bottom fell out for EMU in the bottom of the inning, however, and it all came after the first two batters were retired on groundouts. The next 11 Yellow Jackets reached base as nine runs touched home to open up a 13-3 margin, which also turned into the final score.
EMU earned nine hits and six walks, but again struggled to bring runs home. The men left 12 runners on base in the nightcap and 22 on the day. Ryan McAlister (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) had three hits and a run scored in the game. Estrada finished 1-2 with two walks and an RBI.
Brett Whitlow (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) started and was charged with three runs in 3.0+ innings as he took the loss. Garrett Clower (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) struck out two in a scoreless eighth inning and was the only EMU pitcher on the day to not allow a run to score.
Suddenly on a three-game losing streak, the Royals slide to 12-8 overall and 0-5 in the ODAC. They are scheduled to play at Shenandoah on Tuesday before returning home for a doubleheader with Hampden-Sydney next Saturday.
