Box Score For four innings, the game remained scoreless. In the fifth, ODAC-leading Bridgewater scored the first runs and then stretched out an 8-1 win over Eastern Mennonite's baseball men, leaving EMU Head Coach Ben Spotts 0-for-2 in his contests against his former team at BC.
Although the Eagles had a runner thrown out at home to end the first inning, Eastern Mennonite actually more chances to score as they left a runner in scoring position in each of their first three at-bats.
BC strung together three hits to score twice in the bottom of the fifth, and then added four more in the sixth to lead 6-0.
B.J. Mortimer (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) hit a one-out single in the eighth to get EMU rolling. Kyle Armstrong (Greenville, VA/Riverheads) followed with a double, and Mortimer scored on a Zach Bowles (Staunton, VA/Robert E. Lee) RBI groundout. That would be it for the Royals' scoring, however, and Bridgewater added two more in the bottom of the eighth to produce the final 8-1 margin.
The men had their chances in the game, rapping out nine hits and getting a runner to at least second base in eight out of the nine innings. But EMU left 12 runners on base. Mortimer finished 2-5 from the plate with the only run. Armstrong also had a pair of hits. Catcher Jonathan Estrada (Miami, FL/Doral Academy) reached base twice on a double and a walk.
Starter Casey Harlow (Louisa, VA/Louisa County) lasted one out into the sixth inning and was charged with six runs. He struck out eight, but fell to 4-4. Ryan Henschel (New Market, VA/Stonewall Jackson) and Chris DeWald (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette) each pitched in relief.
The Royals are now 14-21 overall heading into tomorrow's non-conference game with Southern Virginia. The neutral-site contest is at 7:00pm at Casey Field in Covington, VA.
