Box Score The Eastern Mennonite baseball team started their spring break week in Florida with an 8-6 loss to Beloit College. The Royals will play four more games over the next three days at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
B.J. Mortimer (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) had an RBI single in the first inning, and Phillip Jordan (West Point, VA/Christchurch) added one in the second. Beloit took the lead, however, putting up three-spots in the each of the first two innings to grab a 6-2 edge.
The Buccaneers pushed the lead to 8-3 after seven before the Royals made a comeback. The men brought in two runs in the eighth, and one more in the ninth, but left two runners on base in each at-bat to suffer the loss.
EMU's offense had 14 hits, but couldn't overcome a pitching staff which gave up 12 hits and five walks and also hit two batters. Austin Marzullo (Shippensburg, PA/Shippensburg) lasted three batters into the second inning and was tagged for six runs and the loss. Ryan Henschel (New Market, VA/Stonewall Jackson) threw the final seven innings and allowed two runs.
Jonathan Estrada (Miami, FL/Doral Academy) was 3-5 with a run and an RBI. Zach Bowles (Staunton, VA/Robert E. Lee) also had three hits and scored. Adam Posey (Poquoson, VA/Poquoson) and Ryan McAlister (Bridgewater, VA/Turner Ashby) each had a pair of hits and scored twice. Mortimer also had two singles with two RBIs.
The Royals slip to 8-7 with the loss. They take on Thomas More Wednesday morning at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, FL.
