Hornets Finish Off EMU Men in Extra Innings

Box Score

No. 11 Shenandoah finished off the Royals in extra innings in a resumed game Wednesday afternoon in Winchester.  Eastern Mennonite and SU were tied 4-4 last Tuesday in Harrisonburg when the game was halted due to darkness after nine innings.  Each team scored three times in the 10th, before Shenandoah dropped six in the 11th to win 13-7.

After two scoreless innings, Shenandoah hit the scoreboard first with a two-out unearned run in the third.  In the fourth, SU added two more.  One of the runs was unearned after EMU's fielder caught a foul ball and then illegally threw the ball from a "dead ball" area in the right field corner.

But the offense got rolling in the bottom of the fourth when Ryan McAlister (Bridgewater, VA/Turner Ashby) led off with a double.  Jonathan Estrada (Miami, FL/Doral Academy) followed with a single to make it 3-1.  Zach Bowles (Staunton, VA/Robert E. Lee) tripled to lead off the fifth and Austin Oliver (Gordonsville, VA/Orange County) singled with one out to trim the deficit down to 3-2.

The Hornets brought in another two-out unearned run in the eighth to put the cushion back at two, but the Royals returned fire in the bottom of the frame.  The men took what they could in putting together two singles, two hit batters and a walk to score twice.  Justin Rodriguez (Miramar, FL/Pace) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie the score at 4-4.

Neither team scored in the ninth, and the umpires halted the game due to darkness as EMU's fielders warmed up for the tenth.

When play resumed a week later, the solid play went by the wayside.  SU scored three times in the top of the 10th, aided by an EMU error.  The Royals tied it up, however, with three unearned runs thanks to four Hornet errors.

Shenandoah then took over with six runs in their next at-bat, and Eastern Mennonite couldn't answer.

Casey Harlow (Louisa, VA/Louisa County) started for the Royals and did a fantastic job shutting down the nationally-ranked Hornets.  He allowed just one earned run as he scattered five hits and struck out eight in 7.1 innings.  Oliver got two outs to close out the eighth inning, and Daniel Stanley (Henrico, VA/Varina) pitched a scoreless ninth but struggled in extra innings.  Kyle Armstrong threw the 11th and was charged with the loss.

McAlister was 3-5 from the plate and scored twice.  Estrada batted 3-6 with two runs and an RBI.  B.J. Mortimer (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) also had three hits while Bowles reached base three times with his triple, single and a walk.
