Box Score The rain sure affected the Royals. After making the trip to Greensboro, NC, to take on Guilford, the men had to wait nearly two hours for the field to be ready to play on after the previous night's rains. Then after dropping the opener to the Quakers, game two was postponed to Sunday afternoon, also forcing the cancelation of a non-conference game at nearby Greensboro College.
The game was scheduled to start at noon, but didn't get a first pitch until 1:42 as work was done to make the field playable. Neither team's offense looked in sync after the delay.
Guilford was the first to crack the scoreboard, scoring a single run in the bottom of the third. Eastern Mennonite got the run back in the fifth when Michael Wade (Waynesboro, VA/Fort Defiance) brought in Dylan Smith (Sterling, VA/Park View) with a two-out base hit.
The Quakers went down in order in their half of the fifth and then EMU took the lead. Chris Rodriguez (Miami, FL/Pace) led off with a double and fellow freshman Justin Rodriguez (Miramar, FL/Pace) ripped his first collegiate homerun to make it 3-1.
But Guilford plated four in the bottom of the inning. Starter Daniel Stanley (Henrico, VA/Varina), who had allowed only five hits in the first five innings, wore out and allowed four hits as GC skipped in front 5-3.
The Royals had a pair of hits in the seventh, but wouldn't score until the eighth, when Justin Rodriguez led off with his second homer of the game to make it 5-4.
The home team got some breathing room with a pair of runs in the eighth, and then sent EMU down in order in the ninth to secure the 7-4 decision.
Eastern Mennonite out-hit Guilford 13 to 11, but also made a couple of base running mistakes and left five men on base. Chris Rodriguez, who moved into the leadoff spot for the game, topped all players with four hits in five at-bats. Justin Rodriguez hit the first two longballs of his EMU career and finished 2-4 with two runs and three RBIs.
Smith and Wade also had a pair of singles.
Stanley took the loss from the hill, falling to 1-2 despite striking out five in 6.0 innings. Logan Toney (Chesterfield, VA/Manchester) and Austin Davis (Poquoson, VA/Poquoson) each pitched in relief.
The Royals, now 7-17 overall and 1-6 in the ODAC, will be looking to break their seven-game losing skid on Sunday. First pitch with the Quakers is 1:00pm. The contest scheduled against Greensboro has been cancelled.
