Royals Keep Bats Alive But Settle For Split With Guilford

Box Score

Riding the momentum of Friday's upset of No. 1 Shenandoah, the Eastern Mennonite baseball men kept the bats swinging Saturday in Harrisonburg when they welcomed in Guilford for an ODAC doubleheader. The men had double digit hits in each game but settled for a split against the Quakers.

EMU 11, Guilford 8
Box Score
After a quick 1-2-3 at-bat in the top of the first, the Royals went to work in their first chance as B.J. Mortimer (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) led off with a walk and started a two-run rally.

In the second the floodgates opened as Eastern Mennonite sent 11 batters to the plate. Two runs scored on a botched groundball, two more on a Beau Banglesdorf (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) single, and another two on a double from Chris Harpine (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge).

Jake Norman (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) added an RBI single and the Royals led 9-1 after two.

A Guilford error allowed a run to score in the third. Then Harpine led off the fourth with a stand-up triple and later scored to make it 11-1.

The Quakers finally came alive and scored seven runs in their final five frames, but EMU held on for the 11-8 win.

Starter Andy Richter (Perkasie, Pa./Christopher Dock) lasted to the first batter of the eighth inning and picked up the win, his first of the season. Richter gave up six runs, with five being earned, while striking out six.

Catcher Dylan Smith (Sterling, Va./Park View) led the 15-hit attack with a trio of singles. He also scored twice. Harpine finished 2-5 with two runs and two RBIs.

Banglesdorf and Norman each added a pair of hits. Mortimer and Ryan McAlister(Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) each scored twice and Josh Martin (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) had a pair of RBIs.

Guilford 5, EMU 3
Box Score
Although the hits kept coming in the nightcap, both teams struggled to get their runners home. The Quakers scored runs in the first and second to take a 2-0 lead.

Adam Posey (Poquoson, Va./Poquoson) hit an RBI single in the fourth to cut the lead in half, but Guilford got the run right back in the top of the fifth.

McAlister led off the bottom of the fifth with a single and started a rally. He stole second and took third on an error by the pitcher. Banglesdorf singled him home and later Norman tied the game with a two-out pinch hit single.

The teams continued leaving runners on base until the Quakers finally put some hits together in the eighth and chased starter Jason Tate (Herndon, Va./Herndon). With the bases loaded and one run already in, EMU turned to closer Thomas Worley (Prince George, Va./Prince George), who had already pitched in game one.

Worley allowed one run to cross on a sacrifice fly, but limited the damage, leaving Guilford in front, 5-3.

The Royals had two-out rallies in both the eighth and ninth, but left three runners on over the frames and took the loss.

Tate fell to 1-5 with the loss, being charged with all five runs. Worley struck out two in two innings of relief.

Banglesdorf had three of EMU's 11 hits. McAlister and Posey each had two hits.

The teams combined to leave 29 runners on base.

The Royals settled at 8-18 after the split, including 2-10 in ODAC play. Next up for the men is a rescheduled date with Washington & Lee on Tuesday, March 29, in Harrisonburg. First pitch of the single game with the Generals is 3:00pm.
