Eagles Score Four Late To Get Past Baseball Men

Box Score

Last week, freshman Adam Posey (Poquoson, Va./Poquoson) gave up eight runs in a 10-1 loss at Bridgewater. Tuesday afternoon, Posey returned to the mound when Eastern Mennonite hosted the Eagles and gave a great pitching performance, limiting BC to six hits over seven-plus innings. However the EMU offense couldn't come together and the Royals took a 6-2 loss to their rivals.

Posey didn't allow a hit through the first two innings, but gave up a run in the third when the Eagles used small ball to take a 1-0 lead on an RBI groundout.

Bridgewater added one more run in the fourth as a leadoff walk came home after an EMU error in the outfield.

Meanwhile, the Royals were getting hits but never more than one an inning. Through six, BC led 2-0 even though EMU had a 4-3 edge in hits.

Chris Harpine (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) helped the men break through when he led off the seventh with a single. The senior took second on a wild pitch and third on an error by the catcher. One out later Jake Norman (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) brought his high school teammate home with a sacrifice fly, cutting the lead to 2-1.

But the Eagles finally chased Posey in the eighth with back-to-back infield singles to start the frame. Closer Thomas Worley (Prince George, Va./Prince George) gave up a run-scoring double before getting out of the jam.

Bridgewater added to the lead in the top of the ninth with a two-out rally. With a runner on second, three straight Eagles reached base, two with hits and one on an error, as three runs scored to balloon the lead to 6-1.

The Royals tried for their own rally in the bottom of the frame as Dylan Smith (Sterling, Va./Park View) led off with a walk. He took third on a Beau Banglesdorf (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) single and scored an out later on a sacrifice fly.

Norman singled to keep the rally going with two outs but a pop up ended the game.

Bridgewater did out-hit EMU 10-7. The Royals also committed three errors.

Posey (2-3) took the loss despite giving up just six hits and three runs in seven-plus innings. He also struck out five. Worley gave up four hits in his two innings, although only one of his three runs was earned.

Harpine was the only Royal with multiple hits as he went 2-4 with a pair of singles. Smith and B.J. Mortimer (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) each reached base twice with a hit and a walk.

The loss drops EMU to 6-17 overall and 1-9 in the ODAC. The Royals next host Shenandoah this Friday afternoon at 3:00pm. The Hornets, 17-0, took over the No. 1 ranking in the D3baseball.com national ranking this week.
