Box Score The Eastern Mennonite baseball team got a big test Wednesday afternoon, playing at 2010 ODAC Champion Bridgewater College. The men fell behind early and never got their offense in gear, falling to the Eagles by a final of 10-1.
After the Royals went down in order in their first at-bat, the first four BC batters reached base against starter Adam Posey (Poquoson, Va./Poquoson) and the home team took a 3-0 lead.
Posey settled down and the score didn't change until the fourth when EMU committed three errors. Leftfielder B.J. Mortimer (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) threw out a BC runner at home, but the Eagles plated two unearned runs.
By the end of the sixth, Bridgewater had worked out to a 10-0 lead.
The Royals had at least one runner reach base in each of the final four innings, but could only score one run. Dylan Smith (Sterling, Va./Park View) drew a one out walk in the seventh and scored after singles by Jonathan Estrada (Miami, Fl./Doral Academy) and Jake Norman (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge).
Neither team scored in the final two innings as Bridgewater took the 10-1 win.
Posey allowed eight runs over five innings of work and fell to 2-2.
Mortimer was the only Royal with more than one hit as he went 2-4. Smith was 1-2 and reached base three times with a walk and hit by pitch, scoring EMU's only run. Norman had the lone RBI.
The loss drops the Royals to 6-14 overall and 1-6 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. EMU has a road doubleheader on Saturday, playing at Lynchburg at 12:00pm.
