Eagles Sweep Season Series from Royals with 14-6 Baseball Win

Bridgewater College improved its chances of making the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament with a 14-6 win over the Eastern Mennonite University baseball team on a blustery Tuesday afternoon in Harrisonburg, Va.

The win puts the Eagles at 15-14 on the year and 8-6 in the ODAC. EMU drops to 9-16-1 overall, 4-8 in the conference.

Sophomore outfielder Chris Harpine (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) launched his team leading ninth home run of the season for EMU while going 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Sophomore outfielder Ben Wise (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) also had a solid day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Tyler Hodges had four hits in five trips the plate for BC, scoring three runs and driving in another, while Mitchell Edwards was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBI. Blake Stokely also drove in a pair of runs while going 2-for-4 from the dish.

Junior second baseman Cody Davis (Goodview, Va./Staunton River) scored two times for EMU in three at-bats.

After the Eagles scored a run in the top of the first the Royals answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead. EMU then put two more up on the board, scoring a run each in the third and fourth innings to increase their lead to 4-1. Harpine, Wise, and Aaron Martin (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) each had RBI singles while freshman catcher Dylan Smith (Sterling, Va./Park View) had a sacrifice fly in the third, scoring Harpine.

Following a flyout to start the top of the fifth the Eagles knocked out five hits including a three-run home run by Edwards to tie the game at four all. An RBI single by Kevin Kirk gave BC a 5-4 lead before the Royals were able to escape without further damage.

Edwards again added to the Eagle lead his next time around as he drove in one and then came around to score on a balk to make the game 7-4 in favor of the visiting team. BC then went on to plate a pair of runs in the eight and five runs in the ninth to pick up the conference decision.

Martin finished going 2-for-5 with an RBI for EMU.

The Royals will now travel north on Thursday, April 9, as they battle the Hornets of Shenandoah University for a single game beginning at 6 p.m.
