Hampden-Sydney College improved to an even 16-16 on the year and 8-7 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference following a double header sweep over the Eastern Mennonite University baseball team Saturday afternoon by game scores of 8-4, and 12-9.

The loss drops EMU to 9-19-1 overall and 4-10 in the ODAC.

Sophomore designated hitter Matt Atkins (Front Royal, Va./Warren Co.) went a combined 5-for-7 on the day with a run scored and four RBI. Chris Baker (Winchester, Va./John Handley) continued his hot hitting as the junior outfielder was 4-for-8 between the two games, scoring twice while driving in a pair.

Jake Norman (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) and Chris Harpine (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) each went 2-for-4 in game one while junior third baseman Daniel Martin (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) had a hit in three trips to the plate in game two, scoring a run while collecting three RBI.

Herbie Williams was the hitting star of game one for the Tigers, going 1-for-1 with two runs scored and two RBI. Williams later set the Hampden-Sydney record for triples in a season in game two with his seventh three-bag hit of the year.

Johnny West notched the win in game one for the home team, going the distance and allowing four runs, two earned while scattering nine hits.

EMU scored a run in each of the second and fourth innings to trail the Tigers by a slim 3-2 margin. Hampden-Sydney then seemingly put the game out of reach with a five-run fourth inning as Luke Swiney, Zach Harrelson, and Williams each had RBI hits in the inning.

Harrelson finished game one going 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. A.J. Prill had another hit and two runs scored for the Tigers in three trips the dish.

The Royals jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning of game two as junior shortstop Aaron Martin (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) delivered a bases loaded RBI single to left-field, scoring Baker and Harpine.

Hampden-Sydney responded in the bottom of the second inning as Williams registered his record breaking triple with two outs in the inning and the bases loaded. EMU escaped further damage and kept Williams stranded at second by getting the next batter to fly out to end the inning.

The Tigers tacked on another run in the home half of the third inning to go ahead 4-2 heading into the top of the fourth. The EMU offense took advantage of two HSC errors and pushed across six runs in the inning to retake the lead, 8-4. A sacrifice fly by freshman catcher Dylan Smith (Sterling, Va./Park View) along with RBI hits from Daniel Martin, Atkins, and Baker accounted for the Royal offense.

Hampden-Sydney, as they had done two innings earlier, again responded with six runs of their own to swing the lead back in their favor, 10-8. Prill and Harrelson each had RBI hits in the inning while Matt Brown and Evan Rogers hit back-to-back home runs to cap the scoring.

The Tiger offense added a run in each of the sixth and eighth innings to seal the two-game sweep.

Brown went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and five RBI in the win. Williams finished 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI while Harrelson had three hits in five at-bats, scoring twice while driving in the one run.

Smith and Aaron Martin each had two hits and a run scored for the Royals.

EMU will take a short break and then return to action on Monday, April 13, as they host the Chargers of Lancaster Bible College for a non-conference double header beginning at 2 p.m.
