Sophomore outfielder Chris Harpine (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) had a pair of home runs while freshman catcher Dylan Smith (Sterling, Va./Park View) drove in the winning run in game one as the Eastern Mennonite University baseball team split a conference double header with Roanoke College Saturday afternoon in Harrisonburg, Va.

EMU broke a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning to take game one 6-5. Roanoke pulled out the win in game two, 11-5.

Roanoke now stands at 5-6 on the season and 1-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The ODAC split puts the Royals at an even 1-1 in the conference and 5-9-1 overall.

The Maroons jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one as Graham Thacker connected with his first home run of the season, driving in Noah Davidson who reached base on a walk. EMU responded in a big way as Harpine jacked his third home run of the season, a three-run shot over the right-centerfield fence to put EMU up 3-2 after one.

The Royals then plated a run each in the second and third innings on an RBI triple off the bat of junior second baseman Cody Davis (Goodview, Va./Staunton River) and an RBI single through the right-side of the infield by sophomore first baseman Jake Norman (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge).

EMU starting pitcher Michael Moles (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) settled down after the first inning to hold the Maroons at bay until the sixth inning. Roanoke pushed across three runs in the inning to tie the game at five all as Patrick Collins cleared the bases with an RBI double to right-center, scoring three.

Collins was 1-for-3 with three RBIs for RC. Davidson scored twice and had a hit in three trips to the plate.

Smith came up in the bottom half of the seventh inning and with two one and one out, laced a single up the middle to score Davis with the winning run.

Harpine was a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Davis went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI for EMU in the win.

Freshman righty Corey Webb (Berryville, Va./Clarke Co.) picked up his team leading second win of the season with a scoreless inning of relief.

In the second game the Maroons put up a three-spot in both the first, second, and third innings as RBI hits by Jay Laramore, Davidson and Brad Greenway contributed to the offensive attack. Laramore connected for his second home run of the year in the second inning.

EMU slowly began to chip away at the Roanoke lead as a junior shortstop Aaron Martin (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) came across to score in the fourth inning on a wild pitch to make the score 9-2. Harpine then added his second home run of the day, a two-run blast to center field, with Martin following the Harpine homer with a no doubt shot over the left-center field fence, his third on the season.

Smith scored the first run of the game for EMU back in the second inning on his second home run of the season.

Barrett Henderson came into pitch in relief of starter Chris Caputo in the sixth inning and worked his way in and out of trouble as EMU loaded the bases on three different occasions through the final four innings. Henderson allowed four hits and four walks through four innings, but registered five strike outs and picked up his first save of the season in the process.

Caputo notched his second win of 2009, going five innings and scattering eight hits with three strike outs.

EMU's Andy Richter (Perkasie, Pa./Christopher Dock) pitched five innings of relief, allowing only two runs, one earned, on five hits while striking out and five.

Martin was 3-for-5 for EMU, scoring twice while driving in one. Smith had two hits, a run scored, and an RBI in five trips to the plate in game two.

Laramore plated four runs for RC. Greenway went 2-for-5 with a run scored and three RBI.

EMU will take on Penn State University at Harrisburg on Monday, March 9, for a single non-conference game scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
