Randolph-Macon College plated the game winning runs in the bottom of the ninth inning on a walk-off two-run shot by Greg Mitro as the Yellow Jackets defeated the Eastern Mennonite University baseball team 9-7 Tuesday afternoon in Ashland, Va.

The loss drops the Royals record to 7-12-1 on the year and 2-4 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. RMC is also 2-4 in the ODAC, and 7-11 on the season.

Freshman catcher Dylan Smith (Sterling, Va./Park View) went 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI for EMU. Aaron Martin (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored while sophomore outfielder Chris Harpine (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) also scored a pair and had two hits in four trips to the plate.

Michael Wallace had a home run and was 1-for-3 with three RBI for Randolph-Macon. Jeff Beck had two hits in four at-bats, driving in two.

EMU put up a three-spot to start the game as junior second baseman Cody Davis (Goodview, Va./Staunton River) led off with a walk and then advanced to third on a Harpine double. Smith then drove them both in on a double to right. An RBI single by sophomore first baseman Jake Norman (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) then plated Martin with the third run of the inning.

The game remained 3-0 in favor of the visiting team when EMU again added another three runs in the top of the sixth to stretch their lead to 6-0. RBI singles by juniors Daniel Martin (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) and Chris Baker (Winchester, Va./John Handley), along with a sacrifice fly by sophomore Matt Atkins (Front Royal, Va./Warren Co.) attributed to the offensive attack.

Randolph-Macon responded and began their climb back into the contest as they matched the three runs by EMU in the home half of the inning on a three-run home run by Wallace.

EMU added an unearned run in the seventh inning with the Yellow Jackets plating three more runners in the bottom half of the frame, making the score 7-6.

The game held at that score until the bottom of the ninth inning. Greg Meleski led off with a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, and then scored on a single by Beck, tying the game at seven all. Following a flyout to center, Mitro connected for his third home run of the season.

Norman finished 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Davis went 1-for-4 with a run scored.

Beck had two hits in four at-bats with two RBI for RMC.

Next up for EMU is a weekend series with the Hornets of Lynchburg College on Saturday, March 28, beginning at 1 p.m.
