Lady Royals Earn Fourth Shot at Lynchburg
Lauren Derstine and the rest of the Lady Royals defense held Washington & Lee to just five shots in a 3-1 victory.
For three years in a row, it's been Eastern Mennonite and Lynchburg in the ODAC Championship game. But to get there for a fourth time, EMU had to play host to a red-hot Washington & Lee squad, which had won six straight matches - all by shutout. The Lady Royals showed they weren't looking ahead and controlled the Generals Tuesday night in a 3-1 win.
Washington & Lee had outscored their opponents by a combined score of 26-0 in the six matches leading up to Tuesday's semifinal in Harrisonburg. But Eastern Mennonite controlled play early and scored the game's first goal when
Hailee Rittle (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) assisted
Linda Cimini (Cape May, NJ/Middle Township) at 14:43.
Less than four minutes later, the women's two offensive seniors teamed up to strike again.
Sarah Roth (Harrisonburg, Va./Lancaster Mennonite) found reigning ODAC Player of the Week
Alyssa Derstine (Telford, Pa./Christopher Dock) at the top of the circle for her 16th goal of the season.
Katharine Price got Washington & Lee on the board at 20:23 to make the score 2-1, but EMU held the edge into halftime.
In the second half, the Lady Royals simply dominated play. The women outshot the Generals 16-1 in the final 35 minutes as the visitors rarely had the ball around EMU's cage.
Katie Cimini (Cape May, NJ/Middle Township) scored 12 minutes into the half to produce the final score, 3-1.
EMU outshot Washington & Lee in the game 30-5, including 20-3 in shots on goal. Goalie
Becky Nolt (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) had a pair of saves for the women.
The Lady Royals improve to 10-7 with the win and now get their targeted fourth straight ODAC title shot against Lynchburg, which scored three second-half goals to beat Randolph-Macon 3-1 in its semifinal match. The last two years the game has been in Harrisonburg and the Hornets hosted in 2006. Lynchburg hosts this year thanks to a 3-0 win over Eastern Mennonite on Oct. 23. Gametime is set for 2:00pm.
Lynchburg is ranked #10 in the most recent Kookaburra/HFHCA national poll. Five of EMU's seven losses have come to teams ranked in the nation's top 20. The Hornets are 16-4 on the season and 0-4 against teams currently ranked in the top 20.
