Bridgewater College scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and held on to a 9-8 victory Tuesday afternoon over the Eastern Mennonite University baseball team.

Sophomore catcher Zach Polloni (Hatfield, Pa./Christopher Dock) was 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs as senior third baseman Jameson Jarvis (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper Co.) and sophomore second baseman Cody Davis (Goodview, Va./Staunton River) each had a pair of hits in five trips to the plate with Jarvis scoring twice and Davis adding two more RBIs.

EMU falls to 8-25 overall on the year with the loss and 4-10 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Bridgewater improves to 19-11-1 and 9-5 in the conference.

Mike Lenox led the Eagles from the dish as he was 4-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBIs, including a three-run home run. Drew Elkins went 1-for-1 with two runs scored, an RBI, and two walks.

Aaron Foltz pitched five innings for Bridgewater with Chris Gramm finishing out the game, pitching four scoreless innings while striking out four to pick up the win. Freshman Ethan Russell (Huntley, Va./Rappahannock) pitched four innings for EMU, allowing one unearned run on two hits with four walks in relief of starting pitcher Eli Detweiler (Harleysville, Pa./Christopher Dock).

The Royals looked to rebound for a loss last week to the Eagles as they put a five spot on the board in the top of the first inning with Davis starting things off with a double and then coming around to score on a single by Jarvis. Jeff Walker (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) followed with a single, bringing up centerfielder Chris Harpine (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge). Harpine drove in both Jarvis and Walker with his third home run of the season.

Bridgewater responded in the bottom frame as Lenox stroked a three-run home run, cutting the BC deficit to two runs. The offensive burst for the Eagles continued in the second inning as the home team put up another three runs as Elkins brought home one run on a sacrifice fly. With the bases loaded, two more runs came across to score on a hit by pitch and a walk before Russell was able to get EMU out of the inning trailing by only one.

An RBI single by Walker in the third inning tied the game at six all with EMU scoring two more runs in the sixth inning. Freshmen Chris Handler (Mesa, Ariz./Skyline), Ben Wise (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee), and Jake Norman (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) all reached base via a walk and back-to-back singles with Handler and Wise coming around to score on a RBI single by Davis.

With EMU up 8-7 heading into the eighth inning the Eagles struck for two runs on three hits. Gramm then sat the Royals down 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth to ice the win.

Handler was 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Wise finished the contest collecting two hits in four trips to the plate with a run scored.

EMU will return to Harrisonburg, Va., for their next contest as they host Mary Washington on Thursday, April 10, for a 4 p.m., game.
