Royals Split Baseball Double Header with Guilford

Sophomore right hander Jesse Baker (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) pitched the Eastern Mennonite University baseball team to a game one win while the Guilford College Quakers drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth in game two in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference double header.

EMU won game one 4-3, but fell in the bottom of the ninth inning in game two, 9-8.

The Royals are now at 8-24 overall this season and 4-9 in the ODAC while Guilford now stands at 15-16 on the year and 5-8 in the conference.

Senior third baseman Jameson Jarvis (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper Co.) went 1-for-3 with an RBI double in game one while sophomore shortstop Chris Baker (Winchester, Va./John Handley) was 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

Jesse Baker pitched a complete game for EMU as he surrendered three runs, one earned, on eight hits with one walk and three strike outs.

The visiting Royals scored all four of their runs in the first two innings as Jarvis brought in Chris Baker and freshman outfielder Chris Harpine (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) on an RBI double to right-field. In the top of the second, Chris Baker brought home freshman Chris Handler (Mesa, Ariz./Skyline) on a sacrifice fly while freshman outfielder Ben Wise (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) scored on a wild pitch.

That was all the run support Jesse Baker needed as he held the Quakers to seven hits over the next five innings. Guilford pushed two runs across in the bottom of the fifth inning and threatened to add more until Jesse Baker was able to get John Goodwin to fly out to end the inning.

Ryan Hairston went the distance on the mound for GC, allowing four runs on four hits with four walks and six strike outs.

In game two, Jarvis again provided the Royals will an offensive boost as he tallied two hits in five at bats, with two runs scored and three RBIs, including his team leading fourth home run of the season. Sophomore second baseman Cody Davis (Goodview, Va./Staunton River) finished the game going 3-for-5 with two runs scored as sophomore first basman Jeff Walker (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

Alex Starbuck was 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs for Guilford. Jay Cox was 2-for-3, including the game winning RBI in the bottom of the ninth on a single to left, scoring Jordan Nelson.

EMU trailed 8-6 heading into the top of the ninth inning. After Wayde Edelman got the first out, EMU put two runners on with back-to-back singles by Wise and Davis. Harpine came up to the plate and promptly blasted a bases clearing double to right-center field to tie the game at eight.

Guilford came up with their own two-out magic in the bottom half of the inning as Walker was able to get two outs on punch-outs before Nelson came around to score on the single by Cox.

Paul Keenan picked up the win in relief for the Quakers, pitching 2/3 of an inning, with one hit allowed.

Wise was 1-for-3, scoring twice for EMU as Harpine had one hit in five trips to the dish with two RBIs.

The Royals will take on Bridgewater College on Tuesday, April 8, for a single ODAC game scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
