The Eastern Mennonite University baseball team split its final series of the 2008 season as the Royals won game one 3-2 over Washington & Lee but fell in the second game 8-4 Saturday afternoon in Lexington, Va.
EMU ends the season with a 10-30 overall record and a 6-12 mark in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Washington & Lee is now 21-10 on the season and 10-8 in the ODAC and will compete in next weekend's ODAC Tournament.
Freshman outfielder
Ben Wise (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI in game one, the run coming on his fourth home run of the season, tying him for the team lead with
Zach Polloni (Hatfield, Pa./Christopher Dock) and
Jameson Jarvis (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper Co.).
Sophomore second baseman
Cody Davis (Goodview, Va./Staunton River) was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
EMU did not need to rely on the bats in game on as Baker pitched another gem for the Royals, holding the home team to two runs on eight hits with no walks and four strike outs in the complete game victory. Baker finishes the season with three wins, a career high, while pitching a team high 73.2 innings this season. Baker also holds the lowest earned run average amongst the Royal pitchers, at 3.91.
The visiting Royals trailed 1-0 after the fourth inning when they pushed two runs across in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by
Chris Baker (Winchester, Va./John Handley) and a RBI double by Davis. The eventual game winning run for EMU came on the home run by Wise in the top of the seventh inning. Baker closed out the win with a 1-2-3 frame in the bottom half of the inning, getting two pop ups and a ground out.
In game two the Royals were the victims of a pair of two run innings by Washington & Lee as the Generals went ahead 5-1 following the fifth inning. W&L starting pitcher Brendan Clark pitched five innings of one-run baseball, allowing only four hits while striking out four. EMU was able to scratch out three more runs off of the Generals relief pitchers before Jim Plantholt came in and sealed the game with a scoreless ninth.
Davis was 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI in game two for EMU. Freshman outfielder
Chris Harpine (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) added three more hits in five trips to the plate.
