Five different players scored a goal for Eastern Mennonite University as the Lady Royals cruised to a 5-1 win over cross-town rival Bridgewater College Tuesday night under the lights of the EMU Turf Field.
EMU improves to 8-4 overall on the season and 3-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
Bridgewater drops to 7-6 on the year, 1-2 in the ODAC.
"We played well overall and had some good scoring opportunities that we were able to capitalize on," explained EMU head coach Brenda Bechler. "We had a couple of tough losses in our past two games so I'm glad to see us bounce back against a good team like Bridgewater."
The Eagles put the first score of the game on the board in the first period as Kristen Combs found Leah Cossentino in front of the net for the goal (2:38), her second of 2008.
EMU responded in a big way only five minutes later as junior
Sarah Roth (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) notched her second goal of the year. Freshman
Valerie Landis (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown Sr.) then recorded her first collegiate goal thanks to a dual assist from
Katie Cimini (Cape May, NJ/Middle Township), and
Julie Denlinger (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite).
Denlinger then added her own score (30:13) before the half, her ninth of the year, as
Alyssa Derstine (Telford, Pa./Christopher Dock) fed the ball in front of the net to a waiting Denlinger. Denlinger made one quick swipe at the ball, sending it to the far left post and into the net, putting the Lady Royals up by two.
In the second period, EMU added two more goals, this time off the sticks of Derstine and Katie Cimini, giving the home team a comfortable 5-1 lead.
The Lady Royals had a 35-4 advantage in shots and a 13-3 lead in penalty corners.
EMU will welcome in Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, October 11, during homecoming festivities on campus. The 4 p.m., field hockey game will be proceeded by a 1 p.m., men's soccer match against Roanoke College. The EMU women's soccer team will then host the Marlins at 7 p.m.
