Washington & Lee got the game winning goal off the stick of Sallie Armstrong in the 72nd minute as the Generals hand the Eastern Mennonite University field hockey team their first conference loss of the season, 3-2.

The goal was the fifth of the season for Armstrong. Washington & Lee improves to 3-6 overall and 1-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

EMU drops to 7-3 on the season, 2-1 in the ODAC.

The Lady Royals scored the first two goals of the game as Julie Denlinger (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) notched her eigth goal of the year (25:11) thanks to an assist from Kristina Landis (Harleysville, Pa./Christopher Dock).

Cimini then struck for her eight goal of the year 15 minutes later as she put EMU up 2-0 early in the second period (40:19).

The home team then responded with two goals in a span of five minutes as Washington & Lee had scores from Christina Merchant (53:46) and Stephanie Mansey (58:43) to tie the contest.

EMU out-shot W&L 13-8 through regulation. The Lady Royals also held a 4-2 advantage in penalty corners.

It only took the Generals less than three minutes to seal as the only shot in overtime proved to be the game winner as Armstrong was able to sneak a shot past keeper Becky Nolt (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) with Emily Matthews assisting.

Nolt tallied one save in the loss.

W&L keeper Caroline Habliston recorded three saves.

The Lady Royals will return home tomorrow as they host the Captains of Christopher Newport University for a 2 p.m., non-conference match-up on the EMU Turf Field.
