Chad Johns (Waynesboro, Va.) drove in the winning run in the second game with an infield single as the Eastern Mennonite University baseball team swept Guilford College on a blustery Wednesday afternoon in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference match-up.

Jesse Baker (Virginia Beach, Va.) held the Quakers scoreless in the first game as the freshman pitcher went seven strong innings for EMU, scattering only four hits with three walks while striking out four.

The Royals got their two runs across in the bottom of the third inning with freshman shortstop Cody Davis (Goodview, Va.) reaching first base on a one out walk. Davis advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and then came into score on an RBI double from senior Brandon Zollman (Lexington, Va.). Zollman also scored for EMU on an error to give the Royals a 2-0 lead.

Baker shut the Quakers down in the seventh inning and picked up his team leading third win of the season.

In game two the Royals held a slim 1-0 lead until the top of the ninth inning when pinch runner Terrance Penn came around to score on an infield single by second baseman Michael Costa to tie the game at one. Joe Johns held the Royals scoreless in the bottom of the inning as the game went into extra innings. Zollman, pitching in relief of Justin Martin (Charlottesville, Va.) allowed only one hit in the top of the 10th to give the Royals a chance to win it in the bottom of the inning.

Senior Zach Hawke (Salisbury, Md.) got things started for EMU with one out in the inning on a single up the middle and advanced to second on a single by right fielder Zach Polloni (Hatfield, Pa.). With two outs in the inning freshman Jeff Walker (Ellicott City, Md.) hit a bouncing ball up the middle that was stopped before it reached centerfield, but not in time to get Walker at first. Johns then came up with the bases loaded and hit a one hopper to the left of the shortstop that gave the senior first baseman enough time to hustle down the line for the single, scoring Hawke for the win.

Overshadowed by the win was another strong pitching performance from Martin. The right hander held the Guilford bats at bay through eight innings, allowing only five hits and four walks in the no decision.

Zollman picked up the win for EMU after pitching two innings of relief with three strike outs.

The Royals pounded out 17 hits in the game with sophomore left fielder Andrew Pittman (Culpeper, Va.) collecting four hits in five trips to the plate with a run scored. Johns and Polloni each had another two hits in five at bats while designated hitter Jameson Jarvis (Culpeper, Va.) was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Costa and Joe Johns each had two hits for the Quakers who fall to 10-22 overall on the season and 3-11 in the ODAC. EMU improves to 9-25 on the year and 5-11 in the conference and heads to Hampden-Sydney on Saturday, April 21, for a double header starting at 1 p.m.
