The Virginia Wesleyan College baseball team improved to 14-7 overall and 7-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference with a double-header sweep over the Eastern Mennonite University Royals Saturday afternoon on the EMU baseball field.

Game scores were 9-0 in game one, and 10-5 in game two. The Royals fall to 5-17 overall and 1-6 in the conference.

Marlins starting pitcher Dave Whigham pitched a complete game three hit shutout in the first game for VWC while CJ Rhodes went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Virginia Wesleyan held the Royals to only three hits through the seven-inning game with senior second baseman Zach Hawke (Salisbury, Md.) collecting two hits including his second double of the season.

In game two, the Royals bats came alive as EMU scored a run in the first inning on an RBI single from Hawke, driving in senior centerfielder Brandon Zollman (Lexington, Va.).

Hawke finished going 2-for-4 from the plate and ended the two-game series going 4-for-7 with a run scored and an RBI.

VWC captured the lead in the second and then added two more runs in the third before EMU got back on the board with a two-run fourth inning keyed by an RBI double from freshman outfielder Zach Polloni (Hatfield, Pa.), who later scored on a single off the bat of sophomore leftfielder Andrew Pittman (Culpeper, Va.).

Pittman was 2-for-4 with an RBI in the second game for EMU while Zollman went 1-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Freshman Jeff Walker (Ellicott City, Md.) pitched two innings in relief, allowing one run on three hits while freshman Michael Chrisman (Luray, Va.) allowed only one hit and three walks in three innings for EMU.

Marlins starting pitcher Chris Rivera picked up the win going eight innings, allowing three runs on eight hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.

Rhodes was 2-for-4 in the second game for VWC with two runs scored and an RBI with leadoff hitter Brian Schweers collecting three hits in five trips with two runs scored and an RBI.

The Royals will now travel to Randolph-Macon on Tuesday, March 27, for a 3 p.m. game against the Yellow Jackets.
