Royals Split Baseball Doubleheader with Wasps

Eastern Mennonite University defeated Emory & Henry College 7-4 in the opener of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader and dropped game two 14-12 on Saturday afternoon in Harrisonburg, Va.
EMU (5-20, 1-9) snapped a 14-game losing streak in the first game and picked up its first ODAC win of the season. The Royals led 5-0 after three only to see EHC (5-16, 3-8 ODAC) pull within 5-4 after five. However, EMU was able to put the game away with two runs in the sixth for the 7-4 victory.
Senior Casey Armstrong (Bristow, Va.) earned the victory with five innings of work. Junior Josh Pfeifer (Chesapeake, Va.) earned his first save of the season with two perfect innings of relief. Junior Adam Hall (Abingdon, Va.) took the loss with five and one-third innings of work, allowing all seven runs on eight hits.
Armstrong was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Six other players had one hit each for the Royals with freshman catcher Andrew Pittman (Culpeper, Va.) and sophomore second baseman Jameson Jarvis (Culpeper, Va.) each driving in two runs.
Junior left fielder Bucky Mann (Martinsville, Va.) had two hits for the Wasps while senior catcher John Stickely (Bluff City, Tenn.) and freshman third baseman Matt Duffy (Ridgeway, Va.) each drove in two runs. Duffy hit a two-run home run.
In the second game, the Wasps jumped out to a 9-2 lead after four innings, thanks to an eight-run top of the fourth. EMU responded with a four-run fifth before E&H plated two in the sixth and one in the seventh for a commanding 12-6 lead. However, EMU came all the way back thanks to three runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth. In the top of the ninth, RBI-singles by sophomore Gavin Haynes (Clifton Forge, Va.) and Hall put E&H out in front for good 14-12.
Junior George Harrington (Manassas, Va.) earned the victory with two scoreless innings of relief. Junior Brandon Zollman (Lexington, Va.) took the loss after allowing the two runs in the ninth.
Four players had three hits each for the Wasps. Hall was 3-for-6 with a home run, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Senior designated hitter Casey Burcham (Galax, Va.) also homered and was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs. Junior right fielder Eric McAfee (Jefferson City, Tenn.) and Duffy also had three hits.
Jarvis was 5-for-5 with six RBIs for the Royals and hit a two-run home run. Sophomore short stop Zachary Hawke (Salisbury, Md.) was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Zollman had two hits and two runs while Pittman also had two hits and scored four times.
EMU will host Bridgewater College on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in an ODAC game.
