Freshman Rusty Linville's single in the bottom of the 10th inning plated senior Travis Beazley with the winning run as Randolph-Macon College defeated Eastern Mennonite University 8-7 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference baseball game on Thursday afternoon in Ashland, Va.
Trailing 5-4 after six innings, EMU (4-13, 0-5 ODAC) posted three runs in the seventh to grab the lead, thanks to a two-run home run by sophomore Jameson Jarvis (Culpeper, Va.) and a solo shot by senior Kenny Riley (Lancaster, Pa.).
However, R-MC (13-5, 4-1 ODAC) found the equalizer with B.J. Wickham (Sandston, Va.) scoring after doubling and advancing on two wild pitches in the seventh, followed by a Seth Rapoza (Kill Devil Hills, N.C.) sacrifice fly in the eighth.
The Yellow Jackets loaded the bases in the ninth with two outs but Greg Meleski (Weston, Fla.) grounded out to second base to end the threat. EMU went down in order in the 10th to set up R-MC's opportunity. Beazley (Beaverdam, Va.) singled to start the inning and stole second on Rapoza's strikeout. With one out, Linville (Richmond, Va.) singled to score Beazley with the game-winner.
Seven different players had two hits each for the Yellow Jackets, including Rapoza who drove in two runs and scored once. Freshman Dillon Sheads (Rixeyville, Va.) earned the victory with three scoreless innings of relief.
Junior Brandon Zollman (Lexington, Va.) took the loss with three runs allowed on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts in three and one-third innings pitched. Riley had two home runs and a double with three runs driven in and two runs scored to pace the offense. Jarvis had two hits, including a home run, with three RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomore Zachary Hawke (Salisbury, Md.) was 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored.
EMU will travel to Newport News Apprentice on Friday at 3 p.m. and then will stay in the Hampton Roads area for an ODAC doubleheader against Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday at noon.
