EMU Baseball Falls at #21 Mary Washington 10-1

Eastern Mennonite University jumped out to a 1-0 lead but went on to allow 10 runs over the final four innings in falling to the University of Mary Washington on Tuesday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va.

EMU (1-1) plated the first run of the game in the third inning on an RBI double by sophomore second baseman Jameson Jarvis (Culpeper, Va.). The lead lasted until the fifth inning when UMW (1-0) plated three runs to take the lead for good. The Eagles added three runs in the seventh and four in the eighth to earn the 10-1 victory.

UMW, playing its season-opener after entering the season ranked 21st nationally by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, plated 10 runs on 13 hits with one error. EMU had one run on six hits with four errors.

Junior center fielder Brandon Zollman (Lexington, Va.) was 3-for-5 at the plate for the Royals. Sophomore short stop Zach Hawke (Salisbury, Md.) was 2-for-4 and scored the only run.

Junior second baseman Tom McDermott (Smithtown, N.Y.) led the Eagles, going 3-for-5 with four runs driven in. Junior center fielder Eric Fitzgerald (Linwood, N.J.) was 1-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored. Senior first baseman Brandon Cole (Chester, Va.) was 2-for-5 with two runs driven in while senior catcher Lee Rubin (West Orange, N.J.) was 2-for-5 with one run knocked in, and junior left fielder Mike O'Donnell (Ashburn, Va.) was 1-for-4 with two runs scored.

Senior Kevin Foeman (Andover, Minn.), a Baseball America Pre-season All-American, earned the victory for UMW, allowing one run in seven innings on six hits with 11 strikeouts. Senior Casey Armstrong (Bristow, Va.) tossed four scoreless innings for EMU before allowing three unearned runs in the fifth to take the loss.

EMU will host a weekend series against the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford with a 3 p.m. game on Friday and a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
