Guilford Defeats EMU in Baseball Doubleheader 14-1 and 17-7

Guilford College strung together nine runs in the top half of the ninth inning to pull away from Eastern Mennonite University and record a 17-7 victory in the second game of a baseball double header rescheduled from late February. The Quakers also defeated EMU by a score of 14-1 in the first game at the EMU baseball field in Harrisonburg, Va.
In game one, the Royals were unable to muster any offense against Guilford (17-11, 6-4) starter Dave Whigham (4-2). Whigham held the Royals to one run on five hits through five innings for the win. Freshman Scottie Wilcox closed out the game for the Quakers going two innings while allowing only two hits and striking out two.
Senior T.J. Frazier (2-4) started the game for EMU (9-13, 1-6) and went 1-for-3 from the dish with an RBI. Junior Michael Kniss added a hit in three at bats along with a run scored for the Royals.
In the second game the Royals got out to an early 7-4 lead behind the right arm of freshman Jeremy Morris (3-2). The Quakers rallied for two runs in the top half of both the fifth and sixth innings to take the lead 8-7. Guilford then put the game out of reach with a nine-run ninth inning capped off by sophomore Chad Boone's three-run home run. It was Boone's second home run of the day and his fourth of the season.
Junior Cole Thornton went 2-for-5 from the plate with four RBI for the Royals while Michael Kniss added another three hits in four at bats. Designated hitter T.J. Frazier went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI in the loss.
The Royals are scheduled to be back in action on Monday, April 4 against Shenandoah University. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
