Junior Travis Beazley allowed only four hits in eight innings and went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead Randolph-Macon College to a 5-4 victory over Eastern Mennonite University in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game on Thursday in Harrisonburg, Va.
R-MC (8-19, 4-10 ODAC) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning. Junior Seth Rapoza doubled and later scored when EMU center fielder Cole Thornton lost a ball in the sun and then bobbled it. Freshman shortstop Chris Dykes added an RBI single.
The lead held up until the top of the eighth when the Yellow Jackets added to their lead. Senior T.J. Frazier, the starting pitcher for EMU (12-18, 4-10 ODAC), left after surrendering a single and a walk to start the inning. Freshman Jeremy Morris entered and recorded two outs before then giving up an RBI single to sophomore third baseman Sam Snyder. Dykes added a two-run double to put R-MC up 5-0.
Beazley, who did not allow a hit until the sixth, faced trouble in the eighth after EMU sophomore shortstop Shelton Stevens reached on an error and junior right fielder Kolbe Subjeck singled to right field. After an out and a sacrifice bunt by freshman third baseman Curt Almarode, Dykes allowed a ground ball from Frazier to go through his legs to score two EMU runs. Cole Thornton promptly followed with an RBI triple to right field, and junior first baseman Casey Armstrong added a run-scoring single up the middle to pull within 5-4.
In the ninth inning, freshman Bo Garner relieved Beazley and retired the Royals in order to earn his second save and preserve the 5-4 victory. Beazley improved to 4-3 with four unearned runs on four hits in eight innings with six strikeouts and two walks. At the plate, he went 3-for-5 while Dykes went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Snyder ended up 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Frazier fell to 3-5 after allowing four runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings. He was 1-for-3 at the plate with one runs scored. Cole Thornton had one hit in three at-bats with one run driven in and one scored. Armstrong went 1-for-3 with one RBI and Subjeck had one hit and scored a run.
EMU will travel to Lynchburg College on Saturday for a 12 noon ODAC doubleheader. The Royals will then close the regular season at home on Sunday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Roanoke College.
