Riley Home Run in 12th Gives Royals Doubleheader Sweep

Junior catcher Kenny Riley hit a solo home run in the top of the 12th inning to propel Eastern Mennonite University to a 12-11 extra-inning victory over Emory & Henry College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday in Emory, Va. EMU also won the first game 10-3.
The Royals improved to 12-16 overall with the sweep and 4-8 in ODAC play. The Wasps are now 2-23 and 0-14 in conference action.
EMU led 11-5 until E&H plated five runs in the seventh and added one run in the ninth to send the game to extra innings. Riley led off the 12th with his second home run of the day to break an 11-11 tie. In the bottom half of the inning, the Royals closed the game with a 6-3-2 double play to retire the potential tying run at the plate and seal the victory.
Freshman Curt Almarode went 4-for-7 at the plate. Senior second baseman T.J. Frazier went 3-for-7 with four RBI while Riley was 3-for-6. Junior center fielder Cole Thornton, junior designated hitter Casey Armstrong, and junior right fielder Michael Kniss each had two hits as part of EMU's 19-hit attack.
Almarode earned the victory, improving to 1-1 for the season. He allowed one run on four hits in four innings of relief. Freshman Brandon Comer started and allowed 10 runs on 10 hits in eight innings.
In the first game, sophomore southpaw Josh Pfeifer earned the victory and improved to 2-1 overall with the complete game effort, allowing just six hits. All three E&H runs came in the seventh and final inning.
Armstrong went 3-for-5 in the first game. Thornton was 2-for-5 with two RBI while Riley went 2-for-5 with three RBI, including his first home run of the day.
Monday's previously scheduled game against The Apprentice School has been cancelled so the Royals will take the field again on Tuesday with a 4 p.m. ODAC game against Bridgewater College.
