Royals Knock Off #11 Eagles 6-2 in Baseball

Junior Drew Cobb turned in a strong pitching performance in leading Eastern Mennonite University to a 6-2 victory over the University of Mary Washington in a non-conference baseball tilt on Thursday afternoon in Harrisonburg, Va.
EMU improved to 9-11 overall. UMW fell to 15-5 overall and had a 10-game winning streak snapped. The Eagles entered the game ranked 11th nationally in the American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division III poll released on Tuesday.
Senior second baseman T.J. Frazier gave EMU an early lead that it would not relinquish with a solo home run in the first inning. The Royals tacked on two more runs in the fourth with an RBI double by junior first baseman Casey Armstrong and a run-scoring single by junior catcher Kenny Riley.
UMW got on the board in the sixth thanks to the third home run of the season for sophomore center fielder Eric Fitzgerald. The Eagles pulled to within 3-2 in the seventh on an RBI single by sophomore shortstop Ray Moore.
EMU sealed the game with three runs in the eighth inning. After back-to-back singles by junior right fielder Zach Hawke and Frazier, junior center fielder Cole Thornton cracked a three-run blast to left field, his second home run of the season.
Cobb was solid on the mound in his fourth start of the season, improving to 2-1 overall. He went seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Senior Jerry Shank pitched two scoreless innings in relief to register his first save of the season.
Frazier and Thornton each had three hits as part of a 12-hit attack for the Royals. Frazier went 3-for-3 at the plate with one RBI and three runs scored. Thornton was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Freshman Nathan Hartman started for the Eagles and allowed three runs on eight hits in seven innings with four strikeouts. Freshman Chase Townsend gave up three runs on the Thornton home run without retiring an out. He was replaced by sophomore Craig Miles, who finished the eighth inning allowing one hit. Sophomore Tom McDermott had two of Mary Washington's six hits.
EMU will have a busy weekend of Old Dominion Athletic Conference baseball action. The Royals travel to Emory & Henry College for a doubleheader on Saturday at 12 noon. They will return to Harrisonburg for a Sunday doubleheader at 1 p.m. against Guilford College in a make-up of games rained out on February 27.
