First men's basketball and men’s soccer coach?

Appointed to a faculty position in physical education in 1956. He did not arrive at EMC with the stated goal of developing an intercollegiate program, but his efforts quickly moved in that direction shortly after arriving. (Zook, pg. 17)

"Ten full years of gym, intramurals, lifts and varsity, years full of coaching, scheduling, budgeting and philosophizing..." Weather Vane, 5/26/67

"A varsity program is an instrument that can be used in different ways. Here it has been used to build better and more rounded individuals, to develop the capacity for cooperation among individuals and to provide positive contacts with other schools." Weather Vane, 5/26/67

In 1962, Hostetler announced that a "telegraph meet" would be held with Madison and Messiah Colleges. In this "meet," each school recorded their own marks against those from the other two schools to report who would have won had the schools actually competed head to head. No results from 1962 were available, but in 1963 the Weather Vane carried a meet summary that indicated EMC had bested Madison and Messiah in all but three events.
