Hall of Honor
During their 35 years of involvement with Eastern Mennonite University, Dick and Helen Ours have attended over 2,000 athletic events. As a long time manager of the snack shop, and more recently working in the dining hall, Helen got to know many student athletes and enjoys supporting them in their athletic pursuits. Likewise, many athletes got to know Helen and the presence of Dick and Helen at games has been a source of encouragement and comfort.
They became the “parents” for many athletes whose families lived too far away to attend games. Helen was one of the first members of the Loyal Royals helping to plan some of their first activities. She operated the first concession stand through the snack shop and her famous chicken salad helped many athletes make it at EMU. They have become a fixture in the stands and on the bank of the turf field.
For their commitment to EMU athletes and coaches by faithfully attending sporting events, the Loyal Royals present Dick and Helen Ours with the Royal Service Award, October 10, 2009. And the thousands of alumni athletes say a big “Thank You.”?
