Box Score The Eastern Mennonite field hockey team hosted rival Lynchburg Wednesday night to wrap up the regular season. Although the final result proved to have no bearing on postseason seedings, the game was still an exciting matchup featuring the two programs which have won 24 of the 28 ODAC titles since play started in 1982. The Hornets had the edge this time around, shutting out the Lady Royals 3-0.
Lynchburg controlled the opening period, although neither team scored. EMU spent most of the half playing defense and managed just one shot.
In the second half, the visitors finally broke through. Less than two minutes into the frame, the Hornets got a goal. In the 53rd minute Lynchburg made it 2-0 on a deflection.
After EMU called a timeout, the women regrouped and got their best looks of the game. Adriana Santiago (Souderton, Pa./Christopher Dock) just missed deflecting in a shot from Hailee Rittle (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) after a corner.
One minute later, Linda Cimini (Cape May, NJ/Middle Township) ripped a shot which the LC goalie made a great save on.
That turned out to be the last shot for EMU. The Hornets added one more goal in the 64th minute to produce the final score of 3-0.
Goalie Becky Nolt (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) withstood 18 shots on goal in the game and picked up 14 saves, her second highest total of the season. Morgan Spicher (Belleville, Pa./Belleville Mennonite) notched a defensive save.
Despite the loss, the Lady Royals still secured the fourth seed in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament with a 4-3 league record. They will host fifth-seeded Bridgewater in Saturday's quarterfinals, with the winner moving on to take on regular season champ Lynchburg Wednesday.
EMU, which is 9-8 overall, beat the Eagles 4-0 on Oct. 6. Saturday's game time will be announced later this week.
